1973- The pop song “Tie a Yellow
Ribbon ‘Round the Old Oak Tree” became a number one hit on the US, Canadian and
UK pop charts. The song spawned the custom of a yellow ribbon as a symbol of
remembering a soldier overseas, which reached its’ peak during the Iran Hostage
Crisis. That in turn spawned variations like the red AIDS ribbon, the pink
breast cancer ribbon, and so on.
